The Turvey Centre: Psychotherapy and Consultation Services

Group Analysis

The Turvey Centre has been established for more than fifteen years and is situated adjacent to Turvey Abbey, in the grounds of The Monastery of Christ our Saviour. The monastery provides a peaceful setting for the Therapy Centre; however, we are a non-religious organisation and all are welcome. This setting gives a rich and tranquil context for our work.

The clinical staff team are qualified psychotherapists and group analysts. They have varied professional backgrounds and many years of experience of therapeutic work with individuals, couples, families and groups.

The psychotherapy services
we offer are informed by psychodynamic and group-analytic theory, and are aimed towards facilitating personal growth and change.

We provide a range of psychotherapeutic services:

Group-Analytic Psychotherapy
Individual Psychotherapy
Couples Psychotherapy
Family Therapy
Trauma Counselling
Debriefing

Group-Analytic Psychotherapy was initiated in the 1940s by Dr S H Foulkes and developed by the Institute of Group Analysis. It is based on the view that deep and lasting change can occur within a carefully constituted group whose combined membership reflects wider society.

The group provides a supportive and challenging opportunity for individuals to explore past and present difficulties, and to understand themselves and their relationships more deeply, in order to change unfulfilling aspects of their lives.

The group consists of up to eight members, meeting weekly with a conductor, usually on a weekday from 7pm - 8.30pm.

Individual Psychodynamic Psychotherapy involves meeting with a therapist to try to make sense of current psychological or relationship difficulties, in an move to promote insight and understanding as a catalyst for change and growth. The psychotherapist offers a secure and confidential relationship in which current difficulties and unhappiness can be explored, in the context of one's whole life experience.

Couples Psychotherapy
is conducted by two co-therapists, usually meeting every 2-4 weeks. The meeting provides a safe space for couples to address their difficulties together, develop a better understanding of each other, and explore ways forward for their relationship.

Family Therapy is conducted by two co-therapists and involves meeting the whole family to explore current difficulties. The focus is on the family-as-a-whole pooling their resources to think about how each member can contribute towards a better quality of family life. Meetings are usually every 2-4 weeks.

Trauma Counselling and Debriefing is available to individuals, families, staff teams and organisations. We provide a consultation service and develop our interventions to meet your individual needs and circumstances.

Other Services we provide include:

Clinical Supervision – individual and group
Consultations to organisations and staff teams – team development and facilitated away days
Staff support and process groups
Training – short courses, study days, seminars

To help you find out whether psychotherapy may meet your needs, and in what form, we offer an initial consultation meeting which usually lasts for one and a half hours. Normally a meeting will be arranged within seven days. We aim not to exclude people for financial reasons and payment terms may be negotiated with individual therapists. There may also be some opportunities for reduced rates.

Referrals may be made by the individual themselves or through their GP or other involved professionals.
